My Experience With Tetraplegic Wheelchair Gloves

My Experience With Tetraplegic Wheelchair Gloves

When you become the "driver" of a wheelchair, a heavy load falls on your hands.  The hands of wheelchair users are important not only for self-care and responsibilities at home and work, but also for wheelchair propulsion and control. Your hands do the job that your legs once did for you. Once you become a wheelchair user, your hands are likely even more important to you than ever. You must not only strengthen them but also protect them.
I never leave home without my “second skin” which is what I call my gloves. And it's not just me, most, if not all of my tetraplegic friends wear them. So if you have limited hand mobility probably you use gloves.  What do I look for when I choose wheelchair gloves? Comfort, flexibility, padding, durability, material and breath-ability.
I'm not very active so I change my gloves about every 4-6 months, usually because my glove palms wear out and it loses its grip. Eventually the gloves become stretched and too big. Most wheelchair users understand that no glove will last forever. Even though I am not an active user, I don't expect a wheelchair glove to last more than a few months. If you are an active wheelchair user, you should expect your gloves to last even less.
There is a wide range of wheelchair gloves you can choose. And now I have 2 pairs of gloves  which were  designed for tetraplegics that were given to me to test by Rehadesign.  These are my observations:
Flexi-Fit Wheelchair Gloves. They are made from flexible neoprene. They are very light and soft. The lightweight design of the gloves makes them comfortable on your hands because they are very flexible. These gloves opens wide so it's very easy to put on your hand. There are finger holes for each finger so you need to be able to manage that. They close at the wrist with a velcro-like strip. On the palm of the hand there is a special material for improved grip. It is not hard to put them on, I can do it by myself. I wish they were just a little longer at the wrist.  Also, when I take them off, they sometimes turn inside-out. But for use inside of the house, they are perfect.  Flexi-fit gloves are intended for comfort and everyday use around the house, but not for very active use because they are too soft for this.
Ultra Grip Gator Gloves: Also very lightweight but more durable than Flexifit, because they are made from leather. The palm is also made from strong rubbery material which is designed to improve your grip on the wheelchair pushrim. These gloves open very wide (thus the name “Gator” because they open wide like an alligator's mouth) and this allows the hand to be inserted very easy. They also close with velcro-like material. There are no finger holes so you can put them on very quickly. They fit snugly into your hand. They are designed for active life, sports, outings. RehaDesign has a similar glove to Gator Gloves, which close with a strap called “Strap N Roll”. These are designed for tetraplegics with  less hand mobility than I have. Because of the strap they close more easily but don't open so wide. I did not test “Strap N Roll” because I have still have good use of my hands.

This is just the first impression of the gloves since I have only been using them  for about a month. But I like that they are comfortable and perfectly fit to the hand. I like to wear Gator Gloves when I am outside because they are so sturdy and hold your hand so well that it is much easier to push the wheelchair. Some tetraplegics might find them stiff, but I don't. Flexifit gloves are just the opposite. They are soft and comfortable that they  are perfect for everyday use. I've been using both sets of gloves for about a month now, but they don't show much wear.  But as I said, I am not a very active user.

Another important feature that differentiates RehaDesign leather gloves from other leather gloves is that they are made with a special fabric inside of the gloves that keeps the leather away from your hands. The reason this is important is that, if you are active and your hands sweat, normal leather gloves will transfer black dye to your hands and give you black hands. With the special fabric on the inside of the RehaDesign gloves, your hands do not  come into contact with the leather and  there is no risk of black hands.
RehaDesign also carries  several types of gloves for paraplegics, but I don't have much experience with them yet.  I plan to write a review of paraplegic gloves in a future post. If you have any experience, please let me know about it below.
Here you can see all of RehaDesign's wheelchair gloves including the two I tested: http://www.rehadesign.com/products/wheelchair-gloves
I will also look forward to your comments and experience wearing wheelchair gloves under this post or on the RehaDesign Facebook page.
I also add a link to video that shows how easy it is to put on gloves, how soft it really is and how  well it fits.

Be to, jas nusiimant kartais jos išsiverčia į kitą pusę.
