It is never easy to choose the perfect gift. But choosing something for a wheelchair user can be challenging. Of course, you can pick a gift that has nothing to do with their wheelchair. But a practical gift could be the perfect opportunity to help improve a wheelchair user's daily life. That is why I put together this list of ideas for you. This is a list of 10 practical things I already own or would like to own.Massage Heating Pad. Many people who use a manual wheelchair suffer from neck and shoulder pain. As an occupational therapist, I can tell you that this is a really common problem that not only spoils the mood but can also limit a person’s independence. There is no day when my shoulders and neck don’t hurt. I don't actually own a massaging heating pad, but I would like to get one because it really helps me a lot. A friend has one and I use it when I visit. It’s great gift that not only warms but also massages. This heating pad is made from soft material and designed to fit the neck, shoulder and back area. Comfortable and easy to use. It warms up quickly, also you can control the intensity of the massage. It helps loosen muscles, stimulate blood flow and work away stiffness and tension.
Wheelchair accessories. Do you want to give someone you love a gift that is practical and beautiful too? Ultra-Grrrip Pushrim covers combined with "Seksi Spokes" make the wheelchair really shine and they keep and they make pushing the chair so much better! I use them on my wheelchair as you can see from the photo below.
The pushrim covers go on easily. They make the hard metal pushrims much more comfortable to grab, they improve grip because they are made from a rubbery material and because they are available in 6 colours, it is easy to choose a pair which will match or contrast with the color of the wheelchair. When you add Seksi Spokes, the wheelchair really comes alive as you can see from the video . It really is beautiful. There is an offer on the RehaDesign website to purchase Ultra-Grrrip Push Rim Covers and Seksi Spokes at a reduced price.Stainless Steel Travel Mug. I have one and I use it only when someone else is driving the car or when someone pushes my wheelchair and I have free hands, because I like to sip my favorite drink, and when I drive a car, I can only do it when I stop. I fill it with hot tea, coffee or chocolate in the winter. Or sometimes cold lemonade or water in the summer. Such cups retain both heat and cold perfectly. I like those without any handles, I find it more comfortable to hold. But there are all kinds; smaller, of various shapes, with straw. Here is an example of a travel mug that I would like.
Slippers and socks. A very practical gift idea, particularly in these times of Corona Virus are Wheelchair Slippers and Socks. Slippers and Socks are not for your feet! They are designed to cover the wheels of a manual wheelchair and keep the house clean. Imagine what happens when a wheelchair user goes inside with their wheelchair at home or when visiting someone else's home. That's right, all of the dirt and germs that they have rolled over in the street goes inside too. RehaDesign Slippers and Socks go on the wheels easily and protect the floors and carpets from dirt and germs. They are machine washable and have a specially designed inner lining so that there is no slippage. I have a pair of Wheelchair Slippers and really recommend them.
Warm shoes. Eight out of ten of my disabled friends, including me, suffer from cold feet. Therefore, especially in winter, proper footwear is very important. If the feet are cold, the entire body feels cold. So, warm shoes are essential for a wheelchair user. I usually buy shoes one size bigger, so I know for sure that they won’t rub and squeeze my feet. It is important that they are not tight, so they do not cause blisters or decrease circulation. Of course, good shoes are not cheap. I have very similar shoes to these and I am happy with them. Nonetheless, they are very comfortable to put on and take off and most importantly, they keep your feet warm.
Gloves. Most wheelchair users have wheelchair gloves. RehaDesign offers gloves specially designed for quadriplegics and paraplegics. I use RehaDesign Gator gloves, which are designed for tetraplegics. You can see my reviews of Gator Gloves when I first got them and a year later. For paraplegics, there are half finger gloves, for good weather, full finger gloves for cold and wet weather and gel palm gloves, with a gel pad inserted into the palm, for comfort. All RehaDesign leather gloves have a special lining inside so that the hands do not come into contact with the leather. This prevents color transfer (black hands) which often happens with cheaper leather gloves. Gel-palm wheelchair gloves have a special grip pad sewn into the palm to improve comfort. All RehaDesign Wheelchair gloves have special fabric on the palm to improve grip. Make sure you measure your loved one's hands as shown on the website so that you buy the right size. There are also special pediatric wheelchair gloves which grow with the kids hands. Your wheelchair kid can use them for years!
Smart watch. Smart technologies are taking an increasing role in our lives. And I think they can be very helpful for someone like me because I would like to be able to push my wheelchair and answer a call, have my hands free but talk at the same time. They may also have other functions like searching the internet with your voice, tracking your location with GPS or monitoring heart rate to protect your overall health. Smart watches will work best when paired to a smartphone. It may be best to gift the same brand watch as the receiver's mobile phone so they will better communicate with each other.
Robot Vacuum cleaner (RoboVac). It is another technological miracle that can be very useful in the household for a disabled person. I have wheelchair using friends who live on their own and they love their RoboVac. I imagine sweeping and washing the floor would be very difficult for a wheelchair user. So if you want to make life easier for you disabled friend or loved one – consider giving a vacuum cleaner robot. The choice and variety of prices depends on what kind of vacuum cleaner robot you are looking for. The simplest vacuum cleaners start around $150 and simply vacum randomly and return to the charging station when finished. But there are also those who not only vacuum but also wash floors. There is also RoboVacs which can be programmed and controlled remotely.
No Tie Shoelaces System. This system allows you to turn any shoe into slip-ons. It also ensures that you never have to tie your shoelaces ever again. I would like something like this because being tetraplegic it is very difficult to tie shoelaces. The laces look beautiful and colorful. You can buy whatever color you want and match it to clothes or wheelchair accessories. If you’re lazy to tie your shoes every time, or maybe you have limited finger function, so this is the gift just for you.
Electric hand bike. It’s the most precious gift I recommend to you, because I can be independent when I’m with friends or family on a trip or going for a walk. No one needs to push me when I get tired. I bought a hand bike that attaches to my manual wheelchair. It attaches to my wheelchair frame and lifts the front casters so you are wheeling on 3 wheels (2 rear wheelchair wheels and 1 hand bike wheel). It is electric so you don’t need to push the wheelchair. You can go on different surfaces: grass, gravel, rough surfaces. It is an expensive gift, but the freedom you offer your loved one is worth it.
Did you find this list of gift ideas for the wheelchair user useful? I hope this text helped you pick out a gift for your friend, loved on or relative with mobility impairments. All of these will make their life a little easier and definitely more fun. I would appreciate your comments below and will consider them for next year's list.
