I would like to tell you about a practical thing for wheelchair users. Sounds strange - socks and slippers for a wheelchair?? When I first heard about them, I couldn’t imagine what they were. But I guessed it must be something that should be put on wheels. And that was right.
I received a pair of Slippers and Socks from RehaDesign and I tried them for a week. What is my experience with using socks and slippers for a wheelchair? It was really interesting to try them because I had some doubts about them and I was wondering what they were really like.
Let‘s start with slippers: they are really soft, light, and pleasant to touch, just like real slippers. :)  And the first thing I worried about is that I wouldn’t be able to put them by myself because I am quadriplegic. But how can I say that when I haven't even tried it? So, I looked at the instructions and I put the slippers on! I did it all by myself,  as you can see in the video. It all took about a minute, and maybe less. They go on very easily and quickly.  I also let my mother and brother try. They also managed everything very easily. True, it took a little longer to take them off, I  just needed to figure out how to hook my finger under them. The second thing I thought was that it would be hard to push the wheelchair with the slippers on. Yes, it‘s a little harder, but at least on wooden floors, it is fine, though it does feel like something is on the wheels. I haven’t tested them on carpeted floors yet, but I really liked the slippers.

Now about the socks: I was very afraid they would be too small because when I unpacked them, they looked small for my wheels.  But again, without trying, you won’t know. But I could quickly see that it will be more challenging to put on socks because of the velcro strips and everything will need to be done with me sitting on the floor, but I tried. And you know what, the socks I ordered were too small. Thus, the socks remained completely untested. The lesson here is to be careful when ordering socks so you get the right size for your casters.
The cost is kind of high but that price includes delivery anywhere in the world. And there is an offer on the website if you buy Socks and Slippers together you can save a little money.
These types of RehaDesign Wheelchair Tire Covers are available:

  • Wheelchair Slippers: covers for the big rear wheels
  • Wheelchair Socks: covers for the small front caster wheels
  • Mud Eaters: Water-resistant covers for the rear wheels (I did not try them).

  • RehaDesign Wheelchair slippers and socks have a specially designed inner lining so there is no slippage and hold well on tires. They are designed for a manual wheelchair. They are reusable, they can also be machine washed. So after use, just throw them in the washing machine and use them again.
What to look for when choosing Rehadesign wheel covers:
    • Size: Slippers and Mud Eaters are made for a standard 24-inch wheel, Socks you can choose from 3 to 10-inch diameter for the front caster wheels.
    • Color: Slippers come in three colors - purple, blue and beige, and socks are only beige. You can match them, use only slippers or only socks, it‘s up to you.
I have not tried Mud Eaters yet, but this is what I know about them. They are made of neoprene, a rubbery type of material. They are good for people who have particularly wet or muddy tires. They are also good if you go to the sauna or swimming pool because they are water-resistant. But they are more difficult to put on the wheels. It would be very difficult for a Quadriplegic to put on Mud Eaters without help.  They come only in black.
What is my recommendation? Well, imagine going home with dirty tires. Mom just washed the floor and then what? Wait outside until the wheels are clean and dry? Wait for the floor to dry? Or maybe you just put on the wheelchair slippers and socks and go inside immediately. And how embarrassing is it to leave wheelchair tire marks or dirt on the floor everywhere you go?  With RehaDesign tire covers, all this can be avoided. And you can use them in any room you want - at home, at your friends', in a hospital, in the office, etc. Try it!

And be careful when you measure the front wheels. If you have any doubts contact the people at RehaDesign for help.

Tetraplegikui būtų labai sunku užsidėti juos be pagalbos. Jie būna tik juodos spalvos.
Kokia mano rekomendacija? Su RehaDesign padangų dangalais viso to galima išvengti.
